The quirky Chichikov settles into a tiny room filled with strange objects. Suddenly, the space around him comes to life: the curtains whisper nonsense, the cabinets slam shut, and the floorboards creak slyly. It seems as though Chichikov has stepped inside his famous little box, and the dead souls—neatly copied by him—have found their voice, risen up, and begun a devilish dance around their captor.

The film takes place in Russia, America and Japan. The main character Vladimir Ognev is the son of a family of immigrants from Russia. in the early 2000s, he lives and studies in the USA. he has a brilliant scientific career and a happy personal life. after defending his dissertation, Vladimir receives an offer from the UN special department to study the scenario: how will humanity react if it finds out that an alien civilization exists and has been in constant contact with us for many years? over time, Vladimir realizes that this scenario is not as fantastic as it seems. now the future of the earth depends on his work.

A performance by the Alexandrinsky Theatre based on the eponymous play by Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol. The production is based on the stage version by Vsevolod Meyerhold and M. Korenyev (GOSTIM, 1926), directed by Valery Fokin.

I was reminded of people who were not exactly "healthy" according to everyday logic, but were nevertheless genius: Vrubel, Fedotov, Van Gogh. And always—Dostoevsky. Who would have benefited if all these great artists had been healthy? Illness caused them a great deal of suffering, but, when expressed through their creativity, it still brought about such stunning results.
