A German scientist murders his fiancée during World War II when he learns that she has been selling the results of his secret research to the enemy.

Young Count Georg Wolkersheim is sent to the Congress of Vienna to represent the interests of his country, Reuss-Schleiz-Greiz. Tensions arise between the count, his wife Melanie, and their two chamberlains, and when the four attend a court ball, Melanie leaves Georg, assumes the identity of a famous actress, and attracts the affections of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria.

Veronika, a saleswoman at the Tutzinger department store, is in love with Paul, who also works there as a salesman. During a weekend trip in the car, the colleagues grow closer, but Veronika also gets into serious trouble. Röhm, captain during the 1st World War, organisational talent, daredevil, and one of the ‘discoverers’ of the corporal Hitler, was the central figure in the secret power struggles in the just established Hitler state. He demanded a ’second revolution’ and wanted to unite the million-man army of the SA and the Reichswehr under his leadership…

A musician is offered a job in Vienna as stage director, but his disagreements with the aristocratic opera manager end in abrupt firing in spite of a mutual attraction. He's quickly engaged by another theatre and becomes famous for his lavish stage productions and fine acting, which begins their golden age with Suppé and Strauss.

When Philine (Hilde Krahl), the troupe's ingénue, is rejected as proper marital material by the Duchess of Weissenfels (Porten), Karoline Neuber (Dorsch) creates such a furor that she is banished from the country. A performance at the court at St. Petersburg also ends in disaster for the unhappy actress and abandoned by all, Karoline dies a suicide.

An actress and her lawyer husband are so busy that their maid becomes the real mother to their six year old boy and at one point causes consternation by taking the child away to her home village.
