Lost in remotest part of Eastern Europe, Sam is a foreigner, searching for his biological father Lagzdins where a minor road accident leads to a chance meeting with a pig-farmer's daughter, who captures him and makes him a forced laborer on the farm.

First Steps

After their family house burns down, a young woman finds her brother in a state of excruciating guilt. She tries to come to terms with things, whereas he still lives under the authoritative shadow of their father. Without uttering a word, the two share this burden and seek a new path that will lead them away from the past.

The Pit

Markuss must adapt to a new life living with his granny in the countryside. After Emīlija – a neighbor’s daughter – throws some contemptuous remarks about the boy’s father, the boy decides to teach her a cruel lesson. This has severely negative consequences which resonate throughout the village. The only person Markuss can relate to is an old sailor living in the nearby woods. They inspire each other and keep each other’s secrets. It is only through an accidental turn of events that Emīlija’s mother’s intended sanctions against Markuss and the boy’s reputation in the eyes of the inhabitants of the village radically change.

Poor countryside girl Elza has been unsuccessfully looking for a job in Riga before she gets help from an acquantance. After that, fortune seems to turn and rich aged factory owner Ķikulis wants to marry Elza. Reluctant at first, she finally agrees but the marriage doesn't go smoothly.

Night Shift

Imants is a security guard at a small town store. He is always nice, honest and truthful and would not let anything happen to the store and to the people that are working there, until one night when his honesty and truthfulness are set to a test. He has been given a choice – stay and be dishonest with himself or leave and open has hart to love. The choice seems easy, but it takes some courage to step out of a place where you have been for ages.

Ernests (70) and Alvine (64), two married postal workers, have developed a scheme to win a trip to Rome, but Alvine's rapidly progressing Alzheimer's disease complicates their plan.
