In 1931, just before the New Year, in a house of architect Henryk Zaremba scream rips the night. The daughter of Zaremba is found killed in her bedroom, obviously killed with a pickaxe. The police arrives and starts the investigation. Rita Gorgonova, the governess of the girl and also lover of Zaremba becomes the main suspect.

As Poland prepares for a presidential election, the country is consumed by political campaigning and media spectacle. Among the candidates is Jan Rydel, an outspoken and unconventional man who openly mocks the political establishment and refuses to play by its rules. As the campaign progresses, Rydel makes an unexpected decision that turns the election on its head. Determined to put his principles into practice, he sets out to give away what he has accumulated, only to discover that helping people is far more complicated than he imagined. His attempt to distribute his wealth brings a succession of eccentric characters into his life and forces him to confront the contradictions of a society driven by bureaucracy, ambition and self-interest.

A sequel to "Vabank" (1981), introduces the same characters entangled in a duel between a former safecracker and a crooked bank manager.

Tadeusz returns from abroad after a few years; he left his fiancée Wanda in the country, now he cannot get to the common apartment. The paralyzed mother is in a nursing home; he has no contact with her. The swimmer, Judyta, pushes her friend, afraid of heights, into the water, but she cannot understand her deed. Wanda makes a program about the Palace of Culture for television, Tadeusz wants to meet her there.

Stefan is in charge of the construction of a large investment. He fears imminent old age. He visits a friend who lives in a mountain solitude. They witness a tragic accident - a young mountaineer falls off a cliff. They bring help. Stefan notices the emptiness of his family life. His wife wants to leave him, he still believes in the possibility of saving their marriage. During a trip together they get into a car accident. An encounter with Stefan's son, Andrew, occurs, forcing him to make a harsh assessment of his life.

The film is based on the well-known, translated into many languages novel of writer Pawel Huelle. It is imbued with nostalgia and the atmosphere of mystery story of a group of children, fascinated by the figure of a man named David Weiser.

Two men in a game of chess. One of the players is a country boy who accidentally discovered a chess talent, and the other is a former lawyer who has not played chess for twenty years. The lawyer tells the story of learning to play chess: during World War II, he was arrested for no reason and imprisoned. One day, while waiting for another interrogation, he stole the book "Chess Review" from the investigating officer's coat. He perfected it for several months and started playing against himself. The intense mental effort led him to a nervous breakdown eventually...

Set before the first World War in part of Poland under Austrian occupation, the story of a young boy in primary school who later grows up to become a rebellious, poetic-minded teen in the same school when the national movement toward liberation is under way. The story of a country where church and state work together to suppress the human spirit.
