Based in the 1960's, in a small village of the Dominican Republic, Maria, a hermaphrodite, is born. She is brought up by her grandmother in a racial environment. She experiences her first love with La Melaza an assassin who seeks refuge in her town. Her childhood best friend Wanda tries to break up the two due to her jealousy and love for Maria. Maria's life takes a turn when La Melaza discovers her dual-sexuality.

Reynold is dying of cancer. He uses his last meals to share them with his daughter. As the meal progresses, a ritual begins to take hold, the dishes acting as reminders of the past. Vanessa discovers who her father really is.

In 1964, following the landing of around thirty men intent on overthrowing him, the Haitian dictator Duvalier launched a campaign of terror to deter peasants from joining the rebellion, composed of men from the Southeast region where they had settled. Over 50 years later, the peasants recount their story for the first time.

After serving a sentence of 10 years, Aquiles has to choose between saving the life of his son or starting a new path of honesty.
