As well as providing the subject for Luc Besson’s The Big Blue, Jacques Mayol did more than anyone to establish the sport of free diving to enormous depths without an oxygen supply. Using breathing techniques derived from yoga, he went to 50, 60, and even 100 meters—depths no one had considered to be within the bounds of human possibility. Mayol was a sportsman, a mystic, a vagabond, but above all, a man who believed in testing the limits of experience. This visually stunning tribute shows a man’s quest to be at one with the vastness of the ocean and to have no fear of the abyss within, where lurks serenity, freedom and finally, death.

He lives on his wits, isolated even from his peer group who are busy exploring an existence of pleasure-seeking expressed in the cult of the barchino (motorboat). This obsession focuses on the building of ever more powerful engines to transform the little lagoon launches into dangerously fast racing boats. Daniele too dreams of a record-breaking barchino, one that will take him to the top of the leader board, but everything he does to further his dream and win respect from the others turns out to be tragically counterproductive. The decline that erodes the relationships, environment and habits of a rootless generation is observed from the timeless perspective of the Venetian landscape and its island outskirts: the point of no return is a foolish, vestigial tale of male initiation. Violent and destined to fail, it explodes dragging the ghost city along on a psychedelic shipwreck.

The story of Romeo and Juliet is exactly the opposite: two families, the Casisa and the Vitrano, who adore each other, and their two children, Anna and Claudio, students away from home and longtime lovers, who hate each other and want nothing to do with each other. When they return home, the two find an idyllic situation: the friendship between their families is so strong that they've even joined forces in business. The Casisa, ricotta producers, and the Vitrano, producers of cannoli shells, will sell "the lovers' cannoli," for which Claudio and Anna will be the unwitting ambassadors. It's so difficult to tarnish that picture that the two not only lack the courage to admit they've broken up, but, gripped by an increasingly childish fear, they complicate matters by telling outright lies: not only do they announce their wedding, but also the imminent birth of a child. From here, a hilarious game of misunderstandings begins, which will lead them to commit the wrong elopement.
