The honest and a bit naive director of a variety agency, Jožin Petránek, sits on the qualification committee that judges entertainers and performers of all kinds. The man firmly rejects any favouritism. But at work and at home, he's in for nothing but trouble. The rejected "artists" protest, and Jožin's wife Anna would like to promote her friend's daughter into show business. His new secretary Zuzana starts to seduce him. Petranek finally succumbs to the French chansonnier Madelaine. But Zuzana calls Mrs. Petrankova and she drives her husband away from the table and the bed. An emancipated restorer restores rare castle frescoes in an ancient village with figures of ancient heroines - and one of them, Penelope, resembles an old woman who has been waiting for the return of her husband and son for forty years, who have supposedly gone to work in America.

An old man is wandering round a badly signposted and as yet mostly under construction Prague housing estate looking for the high rise block into which he is supposed to be moving with his daughter's family. The old granddad from the countryside likes chatting, nothing escapes his eyes and he wants to give everyone a helping hand.

Young photographer Ondřej's hobby revolves around flying ultralight aircraft. During one such flight, he spots two men at a lonely villa, one of whom is shooting at the other. He manages to photograph the scene, but is spotted in the process. Before he can develop the film, it is accidentally destroyed. Shortly thereafter, he meets a sad model named Viktorie and a wealthy businessman named Walter Rychman at a rock club, who offers him a job. Upon his return, he discovers that someone has searched his studio and soon realizes that Walter was the one who fired the shots. Although the businessman claims it was paintball, he asks Ondřej for the negative, and when the photographer tells him he doesn't have it, he threatens him. Ondřej decides to get to the bottom of the mystery and embarks on an investigation on his own. However, he becomes increasingly entangled in a confusing game that is difficult to navigate.

This leads to neurotic tics and the nickname Mrkácek the 'Blinker.' A stay at a children's camp provides new friends, acceptance, an appreciation of nature, a new outlook on life, and loss of the tics.

Even the best of resolutions can crumble, especially when late paternal feelings are echoed. Although the protagonist is a lecturer in ethics at the university, explaining the principles of good behaviour to the students, he himself experiences many confusions and troubles when he tries to get his teenage daughter from his first marriage admitted to medical school. The eloquent, self-confident man slowly turns into a bully, who also defies his own principles.
