The series was created by Charles Pratt, Jr. and Frank South, and executive produced by Aaron Spelling, Charles Pratt, Jr., Frank South, and E. Duke Vincent.

However, The Colbys was ultimately a ratings disappointment, and was canceled after two seasons.
