With sinister intentions, evil sorcerer Noureddin lures the young Aladdin into a dark cave to retrieve an old lamp that doesn't look like anything special. But: When Aladdin rubs it, the genie of the lamp appears and can grant any of his wishes, whether it's the princess or the entire kingdom.

Danish farmer's son Rasmus Berg has been given a costly education in Copenhagen, and when he returns, he speaks Latin to his parents, and Latinises his name as Erasmus Montanus. He wants to "dispute", and goes on to "prove" a number of absurdities, such as that his mother is a rock. He is contrasted to his brother Jacob who is only interested in knowledge which of practical application.

Karl Åge and Regitze host a summer garden party for close friends, their son, and his family. Karl Åge is quiet, detached; Regitze is spirited, lively. He thinks back: love at first sight during the war, living together unmarried, her mother's hunger strike when they won't baptize their son. Regitze is passionate and forthright; she speaks her mind. He remembers her inviting a derelict for Christmas dinner, and the man shows up with five bashful friends. He recalls her taking on their son's teacher when the man slaps the lad. He remembers her love of dancing and his fear that his social clumsiness might end their relationship. Now, in twilight, he has other things to face.

Jeppe is a bedraggled day laborer whose great vice is brandy. And when he falls down drunk in the field, a passing baron is tempted to play a prank on Jeppe. The baron's lackeys carry the sleeping Jeppe up to the castle, dress him in the baron's finest bedclothes, and lay him in the baron's bed. Jeppe soon takes advantage of this to take revenge on old enemies and indulge in old vices...

Two Danish poets meet by chance at Mrs. Lind's guesthouse in Haderslev. Herman Bang and Holger Drachmann. They both throw themselves into the personal problems of the maid Karen. Or are they more interested in their own?
