5th Republic is a controversial political drama about the Fifth Republic of South Korea, one of the most turbulent times in modern Korean history. The 41-episode television series covered the key aspects of the period from President Park Chung-hee's assassination to general Chun Doo-hwan's military coup and his bloody rise to power, as well as the ensuing conflicts between the pro-democratic movement and Chun's military regime and the behind-the-scenes power struggles that ultimately led to Roh Tae-woo's presidential succession in 1987. Given the sensitive nature of the subject matter, 5th Republic tread a fine line between fact and fiction, and faced many challenges even before the start of the production - one of which was pressures from actual political figures who threatened to sue the network for defamation if the script was not modified. Moreover, there was concern over the possible glorification of the drama's lead character Chun Doo-hwan played by Lee Deok-hwa whose strong charisma helped draw in big audience during the drama's initial broadcast on MBC in 2005.

Kang Yoo-na is the daughter of a pickpocket who learned the trade from her father and is already famous in her own right (with a prolific rap sheet of her very own, and three prior convictions). After being released from prison, she works as a part-time barista at a friend's café, but sometimes goes back to her old habits. Yoo-na shares a multiplex house with a rag-tag group of personalities, including an ex-gangster, a call girl, and a day laborer. They may not have much to boast about, but they are bright and warm people who live their daily lives to the fullest. Things take an interesting turn when they get a new neighbor — unemployed but seemingly pure-hearted Kim Chang-man moves in. Chang-man is an aspiring social worker, and as Yoo-na gets to know the salt-of-the-earth good boy next door, he starts to change them all for the better. Residing together under the same roof, they come to understand each other and mend their past wounds.

A complicated romance begins when a woman falls in love with a man and gets lost between love and friendship.

Detective Kang Dong-Soo's fiance is killed mysteriously. He works with a female detective who can see 3 days into the future. She sketches what she sees. They set out to capture the murderer. Kim Do-Jin is a former special forces member. His pregnant wife was killed and he plots revenge.

Nam Geum Pil is a man in his 40's and he lives with his father and daughter. Out of the blue, he decides to quit his job. He receives criticism from his family, but he doesn't care. He freeloads from his friend when he wants to drink alcohol. Meanwhile, Nam Geum Pil becomes aware of a male neighbor who looks like an unemployed man, but he actually makes a lot of money as a webcomic writer. Nam Geum Pil then decides to become a comic writer.

In a story of two men switched at birth, noble-born Chun Doong lives as a slave and becomes a heroic outlaw, while beggar-born Gwi Dong lives as a nobleman and police chief; then each falls in love with the same girl, Dong Nyeo.
