There he becomes friends with the young emperor Hong Hei (Wai mistakes the emperor as another young eunuch) and falls in love with the emperor's younger sister, Princess Kin Ning. His adventures in the Forbidden City leads him into discovering the empress dowager as an impostor; finding several volumes of the prized 42 Chapters which contains the location of a treasure cave; helps the emperor kill the baddie courtier, Lord Obai; and see his position rise from humble eunuch to a grand courtier and confidante of the emperor.

Set in the Northern Song Dynasty, the story follows Qiao Feng, Duan Yu, and Xu Zhu as their lives intersect within the martial arts world. Through friendship, conflict, and romance, they navigate a complex web of relationships and rivalries that reflect the deeper emotional struggles of humanity.

After decades of struggles, famine, and bitterness which the Chinese citizens blamed on the Yuan Dynasty's misgovernment, the Martial Arts sects have begun to rebel. Prince Ruyong asks Cheng Kun, a Shaolin monk with an ulterior motive, for a plan on how to deal with the rebels. "The wielder of Heavenly Sword and/or Dragon Sabre rules the world." This well known legend in the Martial Arts community is the impetus for the tale of Zhang Wuji. The story begins with how his parents met (episodes 1-3), then tells his trials as an adolescent (episodes 4-8), proceeds to relate his rise to prominence (episodes 9-23) and reveals the secret behind Heavenly Sword and Dragon Sabre (episode 23), and ends with the confluence of Wuji's love life, the Martial Arts sects' long standing grudges, and cruel fate.

The Return of the Condor Heroes is a Hong Kong television series adapted from Louis Cha's novel of the same title. It was first broadcast on TVB Jade from 31 October 1983 to 6 January 1984 in Hong Kong.

Zhang Cuishan of the Wudang Sect was despised by the decent sect of the world because of his love for Yin Susu, the daughter of the cult hall master Baimeiying. Fortunately, Zhang Sanfeng, the head of the Wudang Sect, understood the righteousness and accepted them and his son Zhang Wuji (played by Ma Jingtao).
