A cynical actor, Lev, is fired from the theater where he has worked his entire life. In order to earn a living, he finds himself in a psychiatric hospital, pretending to be mentally ill. There, he commits a serious crime, and the question arises: who is he - a mentally ill person or a brilliant actor?

A provincial journalist visits a famous writer and Nobel Prize winner to interview him on the occasion of release of his new novel. However, their conversation reminiscent of a chess game gradually reveals a chain of secrets that link the two men to the same woman. Based on the play by Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt «Variations énigmatiques».

After the woman's death, a quarrel breaks out between her three children over their shared apartment where they spent childhood. In the province, even a small amount of money is life-saving for people. The youngest son Pasha is against selling. He still lives here and in addition, he took care of his old mother. But both his brother and sister are convinced of the need to sell it. When relatives run out of arguments, they start doing horrible, and above all, irreversible things. After all, when there is money, even between relatives, people change.

In a world where you can buy or rent absolutely everything, a young family decides to pull off a scam, and to do so, they rent a little girl from an orphanage. But even in such a world, there is always room in people's hearts for something more.
