Hanzawa Naoki works as a loan manager at the Osaka Nishi branch of Tokyo Central Bank. One day, Hanzawa makes a loan contract for 500 million yen with Nishi Osaka Steel Company. Hanzawa didn't want to approve the loan, but he had to due to the branch manager's order. Nishi Osaka Steel Company seems financially stable, but the company actually hides massive amounts of debt through fraudulent accounts. The company is caught. Three months later, Nishi Osaka Steel Company goes bankrupt. The bank's branch manager is Asano. He is an ambitious man and tries to shift the blame to Hanzawa. Hanzawa then attends an inquiry about the loan failure at the bank's headquarters in Tokyo. Hanzawa denies fault and promises to retrieve the 500 million yen loan. He did this because it's the only way for Hanzawa to survive as a banker.

Shinichiro Kosaka is a detective of the major cases unit of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police and on the path to become captain of the unit when he makes a mistake during an investigation. An unemployed man named Suzuki is taken in by police after breaking a booze vending machine. When he predicts the explosions of two bombs and claims there are more, the police start to investigate him as a terrorist. However, Suzuki first claims to know about the bombs through psychic clairvoyance, and then claims he was hypnotized to forget. He gives hints about the bombs with riddles while riling up his interrogators, especially senior detective Kiyomiya and his junior Ruike. Things seem to be connected to a disgraced cop named Hasebe, who committed suicide after a scandal some years ago. But is Suzuki actually the perpetrator behind the bombs or not?

Yū Amagi is a slightly eccentric detective who has been assigned to the Twelfth Section of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department's First Investigative Division from the Lost and Found Centre. The Twelfth Section is called the "graveyard of detectives" and ridiculed as the "banishment room where hardened detectives who cannot be fired are sent." Its assembled detectives Kōsuke Samura, Takumi Yamashita, Keita Nagasawa, Tamaki Mizuta, and Masatoshi Katagiri are elite and yet oddballs. Amagi appears fixated with time which seems to have no relation with a case. Raising questions about the timelines of the perpetrator and victim derived from the estimated time of death, time of crime, time of alibi, and time limit, he searches for the meaning of "blank time" which arises from this. He obsesses over the weight of every minute and second of time because of some incident.

Based on the same-titled novel by Ikeido Jun (the writer of Hanzawa Naoki series), the drama unfolds against a backdrop of economic recession. Hosokawa Mitsuru is the current president of the core-precision tools manufacturing company, Aoshima. He was personally recruited from another company by the company's founder, Aoshima Takeshi. Needless to say, this move was not well-favored by the existing management who themselves were vying for the job. Not long after Mitsuru joined the company, the global financial crisis caused the economy to slump, and Aoshima was certainly not exempted from the ill-effects of the slump, which was accentuated by fierce competition within the industry. Realising that he needs to stem the company's cashflow crisis, Mitsuru proposes to sell the company's baseball club. However, his proposal is opposed by all the other top management, especially Sasai Kotaro, a long-serving employee who feels that he should have been promoted to President instead of Mitsuru. Mikami Fumio, who is the baseball club's manager, also tries to foil Mitsuru's plans of selling the club. Amidst all the enmity of the long-serving management, and also sabotage from a rival company, Mitsuru has to find a way to save the company from its downfall...
