A feature-length film based on the play “A Dog’s Memory” by scriptwriter and Hoshino’s mentor Takahashi Tatsuo [高橋辰雄]. This film depicts the wandering journey of two women who came to Tokyo from Hiroshima but found themselves with nowhere to go. And, the story later leads to the sequel, “There Are Bats Here Too” [ここにもコーモリ] (1987), and its spin-off, “Shinako on the back” [背中でしな子] (1989).

Shot in Venice by the sea at night, struck by a thousand lights.

The oldest surviving work by Hoshino. A short drama about three young men and one girl. Rather than remaining confined to the typical image of youth often found in student films, it is filled throughout with experimental attempts, revealing the early seeds of ideas that would later connect to Hoshino’s subsequent works. A playful and pop-infused piece that strongly evokes its era.
