Henning Stehmann is an investment advisor and has cheated several people in his immediate vicinity, including his entire neighborhood, out of their money. Probation officer Klara Sonntag is to take over the court assistance and write an expert opinion on the man for the public prosecutor's office.

After an accident while climbing in Patagonia, extreme sportswoman Barbara is forced to return to her home country, which she left more than ten years ago. Unlike her boyfriend, who is unable to cope with caring for Barbara, who has been confined to a wheelchair since the fall, her mother Irene and father Hans welcome her "Bärbel" home with kissing arms.
