Before the Night

Osman can understand his mother tongue, Kurdish, but cannot speak it, and he speaks Turkish, which happens to be his second language, but cannot understand it. As a result of this condition of his, Osman starts to fail at handling two concurrent tasks. Just like he cannot respond to his patrons while he is working, he cannot engage in a conversation with his friends whilst they are having coffee together. Even though he wants to get married, he fails at sustaining a long-term relationship with women whom he meets. Osman’s life starts to change after a customer tells him that she could help him with his obsession.

The film is about a limited-superhero who wants to change the world with daily, weird and funny works.

Shop owner Ali Kemal and his fiancée Berfin are living their ordinary, inconspicuous lives; both are very much looking forward to the day of their wedding. But then something unusual happens: A strange woman named Aram enters Kemal’s shop and tells him the baffling prophecy that he will turn into a woman on his 30th birthday. At first, Kemal doesn’t believe a word she says, but after witnessing someone else’s gender metamorphosis, he starts thinking that Aram is right. How will the upcoming change affect his relations with Berfin however? As a woman, Kemal will still want to marry her.

Because of the constant rumbling of his stomach, Baran becomes estranged from his social circle and loses his job. When he returns to see the doctor, Havin takes a close interest in the sounds coming from his stomach, and the story begins to unfold in entirely unexpected directions.

Hidden away in the Suriçi quarter of Diyarbakır, the Küpeli swimming pool has been a place to cool off in the heat of summer for many years. The pool is known as a draw for swimmers in waist-cloths and idiosyncratic divers and the source of many a legend. Its future, however, is uncertain given plans to demolish the site as part of an urban regeneration project.
