Nobody Knows Who I Am

In the confines of their homes, parents of severely disabled children hope for a place in care and support services. In the meantime, they try to cope with the difficulties and behavioral problems. In this existential stalemate, the film follows the work of Lucas, a specialized educator, sometimes advised by the hospital, who visits the families' homes and tries to help them. Full of energy and optimism, Lucas helps families at the end of their tether to build a more peaceful life, without waiting for a structural solution that is slow in coming.

Jack, a young man from Brussels with a severe disability, has one obsession: to sleep in Paris at the “most chic hotel in the world.” His mother, the director of the film, sees this as a chance to escape their stifling daily routine, punctuated by Jack’s overwhelming imagination and his stays in hospital. Mother and son embark on an unlikely escape by bicycle from Brussels to Paris.

This film raises an important question for us, the parents of different children: how do we bid farewell to someone while the situation forces us into a hand-tohand fight? If a baby kangaroo leaves his pouch at a certain moment, the handicapped child stays longer in the lap of his/her mother. Then the stake is, when does one dare to gently push him/her out? For his/her part, the child also has to prove to the mother that (s)he can become independent.
