The Night's Substance

Akin is a dedicated Cuban doctor working in Brazil for the Mais Medicos/More Doctors programme in 2018. From his daily routine in an indigenous community to his intimate moments with Érica and Sérgio, his relationship with Brazil gets deeper and stronger. With the election of Jair Bolsonaro, the cooperation between the two countries ends abruptly. He must make a decision: return to Cuba and abandon the relationships he has been cultivating or stay and reinvent himself without being able to practice medicine.

"My Uncle with the Camera" follows 30 years of home movies shot by Paulo Henrique of his family in Vitória—an upper-middle-class family from Espírito Santo growing up in Brazil during the 1990s and 2000s. Through the intimate gaze of his camera, a political panorama of Brazil emerges, shaped by masculine family affectivity.

There is a house by the river. In this house, a woman. Her eyes carry a sadness. In her solitude, the river becomes her main companion, her confidant, and finally her lover.

João, a Portuguese performing arts student, is finishing his schooling season in Rio de Janeiro. It’s his last week this side of the ocean and he rediscovers the city he’s been living in for the previous 10 months.

Juan (Arthus Focchi) and Djari (Welket Bungué) are foreigners who met in Rio de Janeiro and became best friends. Juan has a bad feeling, something is wrong, the wind whispers. In a conversation with Djari, Juan warns him that he will leave. Something sudden happens before he travels. Djari will have to deal with this.
