1900, Kastoria, Western Macedonia. Greeks, Turks, Jews, and other nationalities live together under the Ottoman Empire, amid the despair, instability, and confusion brought about by the Greco-Turkish War of 1897. Under these circumstances, a family of fishermen on Lake Kastoria, a fisherman, his wife, his grandfather, and their five children try to make a living. The daughter works in the fur trade, the younger son attends Greek school, while the older son, Christos, helps his father with the fishing. The flower that emerges from the lake is personified in the film's main character, Christos. Every morning, when the sky and the water in the lake become one with the mist, Christos casts his nets... This apparent tranquility in Christos' life is disrupted by his encounter with a wounded rebel, abandoned by his comrades.

It is the summer of 1974. After the Turkish invasion in Cyprus the greek dictatorship mobilises the army. A small squad in northern Greece is ordered among others to go to Cyprus, but when the dictatorship falls, the soldiers are left in the island of Samothrace awaiting orders. As days pass things are getting out of control

Thanasis an honest tax official in the tax office. He can not cope and has trouble providing the family of the necessities. So the wife is forced to go to work in a factory as a result not seen at all. !!!

His advanced studies in philosophy have caused Stephanos to view all people as his inferiors. When he is discharged from the -obligatory in Greece- army service, he thinks the world belongs to him. In reality all that does belong to him are debts left by his mother who has just died and rejection by his formerly devoted girlfriend. Nikos, an old high school classmate, reappears in his life.

A group of men that their friendship starts from the army, meet after years in the funeral of a friend. This bad time reunites them, as for many years the family life and obligations, had absorbed a strong friendship.
