Director Bernd Sahling documents almost four years in the life of a young man who experienced two political systems, East and West Germany, and cannot fulfill his dreams in either of them.

More than anything, 10-year-old Sascha likes to go on bike rides with the neighbour girl Elli and collect sounds. He also has a passion for fixing up his bike in his improvised workshop. What he doesn't like is the new special school he has been sent to in order to learn how to read and write. One day Sascha is caught stealing and his mother decides to seek help at the youth welfare office.

Under the artistic direction of director Andreas Dresen, 20 renowned documentary filmmakers, experienced television writers, and teams tell stories about the country and its people. The teams filmed at 20 different locations between June and August 2010 under the same production conditions: four days of filming, one week of editing.

When Michael was released from the Jugendwerkhof at the age of 16, he said: "... There has to be controversy to make progress, to achieve something in life, to be a human being at all." Three years later, the movie tries to find out what has become of him.

If twelve-year-old Karl had been able to choose who he fell in love with, it would not have been the much taller Lea from his class. Now he doesn't have much time to fnd out whether Lea can reciprocate his feelings. After the summer holidays, she will change schools​.
