Wahid and his daughter Soufiya return to Tunisia after a long stay in West Africa.Wahid would like to transform Soufiya into a real Tunisian, a true daughter of their land, but the country has changed a lot in there absence.

The plan to build a large shipping canal between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea had been around for a long time. But it took a man with the drive of Ferdinand de Lesseps to make it happen.

A community of people rejected by society live in an abandoned residence located in a "Medina": an old town in Tunisia. Al Bab, a local criminal running the residence's prostitution circle, returns from prison on his wedding day. Fraj, his brother and the town warlock, falls in love with Ramla, his brother's future wife: He is the only man of the residence who has seen her face, as she is kept prisoner in one of the rooms until the wedding night.

A workaholic father becomes sole parent to his two young sons, and finds it hard to relate to them, consumed as he is with his own grief.

The small south Tunisian village of Al-Malga (literally "The Shelter") is spurred into action when a series of phone calls from the capital announce the impending visit of a prestigious production team from German television in the region. Consequently, the town's cultural committee decides to give a positive image of the village and the country and creates an artificial veneer, substantially camouflaging the reality. Chaos ensues as the committee's sycophantic chairman, an ardent feminist, and a number of other unusual characters disagree on the best course of action.

In the 70s, a communist-leaning movement was outlawed, and its activists were detained. In order to be freed, the authorities asked the detainees to apologize to the president. They declined, but one changes his mind.
