Memoirs of a Nun

The story tells of a family tragedy that is based (not always factually accurate) on a well-known tragedy involving the ruling family of Austria-Hungary in 1889. Various names have been changed.

A nobleman gradually falls in love with a woman he was forced by relatives to marry, against his will.

A Bolshevik agitator is enticing workers into a violent rebellion in post-WWI Berlin, in order to create anarchy. He charms the wife of a factory director into helping him, but the forces of law and order are fighting back.

The title alludes to the popular 1925 song I Lost My Heart in Heidelberg composed by Fred Raymond with lyrics by Fritz Löhner-Beda and Ernst Neubach. The film taps into the nostalgic reputation of Old Heidelberg.

Anastasia's supposed escape and possible survival was one of the most popular historical mysteries of the 20th century, provoking many books and films. At least ten women claimed to be her, offering varying stories as to how she had survived. Anna Anderson, was maybe the best known Anastasia impostor.

Deviating from the historical facts, Lola is introduced as a young Spanish “Gypsy” who becomes involuntarily embroiled in an attempt to poison the Infante of Spain (a short but splendid cameo by Heinrich George). As a result, she has to flee the country, arriving first in Italy, where she is taught how to act like a lady. Later, in Paris, she is invited to dance at the city’s prestigious opera house, becoming a worldwide sensation. She then becomes secretly involved in a revolutionary plot by Louis Napoléon, the future emperor of France. When the plot fails, Lola is once again forced to flee, this time to Munich, where she captures the attention of Ludwig I. Their ensuing affair arouses a great deal of hatred among the people and the establishment, however. In the end, Lola has no choice but to leave again, and vanishes into the night mist.

Veronika, employed in a flower shop, has the habit of leaving flowers with a note -"Gruss und Kuss, Veronika (greetings and a kiss, Veronika)" to a special client she has fancied about. But he has the habit of sending flowers to an array of women. This puts her into action to prevent it, causing misunderstandings that will later have to be solved -somehow.

It was not just the children who were treated badly by the wealthy Weimar republic. Robert Kramer is released from prison but struggles to adjust to civilian life. His father disowns him, his wife has left him for another man. There is no work. He eventually arrives in a shelter for the homeless, and seeks salvation through Emma, a prostitute.
