ESSENTIEL — A Portrait

In 1829 the naturalist Alexander von Humboldt attempted a russian-siberian expedition. Humboldt travelled to obtain a clear view of nature, people and life in this immense country. 2019 naturalists and humanists attempted a transdisciplinary expedition on the trails of Humboldt. To capture the events various cameras were taken along. A non-chronological narration.

In the old projection room of a cinema something comes to life. 24 frames per second. 24 beats per minute. The analogue film is infinite. ∞

We are freeing us from gravity and fleeing from reality. We are weightless, free. Everything becomes VACUUM.

SUMMER. HEAT. SWEAT. CHILDREN'S LAUGHTER. ALL BECOMES DARKNESS.

The encounter ends in an relationship. They value and forgive each other. The relationship grows and roots deeper then any other before. — But every fire comes to an end, vanishes and all emotions congeal. Remaining only strangers.

Using diary excerpts, photographs and memories from companions, the film paints the portrait of the artist Jürgen Baldiga who sensitively and authentically captured the West Berlin queer scene of the 1980s and early 1990s with his camera.
