Yrjö Niemelä leaves the countryside for Helsinki. Unemployed, homeless, and penniless, the young man attempts suicide in despair, but a Salvation Army soldier comes to his rescue at the last moment. His luck changes when Yrjö gets a job in a warehouse and, as a fast runner, becomes a sports coach. His childhood sweetheart Elsa encourages him to succeed.

During the Helsinki Olympics, Sotajermut Ryhmä and Romppainen are Olympic coaches. When Delila, coached by Romppainen, is robbed, a series of events begins, involving secret plots, fights, and even tenderness.

The film, shot on location on the plains of Ostrobothnia, conveys a good sense of its unique landscape. Both Järviluoma and the director, Jalmari Lahdensuo were from Ostrobothnia and the film suc­cessfully expresses a feeling of the true spirit of the province.

When the general manager of the factory, Lumiala returns from his travels, he learns that his wife Anna has hired a young man named Oras as an office assistant. Anna, who feels Oras is the fruit of his youthful sin, is ready to defend the boy despite his family's petitions and Ora's crimes. Ora's girlfriend Pansy also tries to keep him on the right track.

The confident Colonel (ret.) Rainer Sarmo, alias 'Dead Man', charms women and knocks out crooks. Together with his friend Captain (ret.) Mikko Vehmer, he tracks down crime boss Thomas Gardener. The mysterious beauty Berita confuses the course of events.

Helena, a beautiful school teacher in a countryside hamlet is just going to marry her childhood friend Erkki, but a day before the wedding her first love Jari arrives to the scene.
