When his car breaks down, Amitabh Bachchan finds himself in a busload of students. Shortly, the students, debating heatedly whether man is greater or a woman, put the question to their esteemed guest.

Mahesh Chopra lives a middle-classed lifestyle with his Government-employee dad, and mom, Shanti, in Government quarters in Bombay. Here he is enrolled in an Arts college, and is in love with wealthy Kiran Mehta, much to the chagrin of her businessman dad. He successfully graduates, and his dad wants him to carry on and get a post-graduate degree. Before he could do so, his dad retires, they are forced to vacate their apartment, and move into slums, where Mahesh's life spirals out of control.

Loosely based on the 1957 classic "Dekh Kabira Roya", this is a story of three male friends, Deepak, Vinod and Sanjay. While Sanjay runs a business; Vinod is an ardent cricket fan and player; and Deepak a singer. The three pals meet three young ladies named Neela, Shree, and Sherry, who would like to marry a businessman, a cricketer, and a singer. The dreams of these ladies do come true, and they wind up on a marriage pandal with the love of their lives. But wait, Neela who wanted to marry a cricket player is about to tie the knot with businessman Sanjay; Shree wanted to marry a businessman but ends up with Deepak the singer; and Sherry who wanted to marry a singer ends up with cricketer Vinod. To add to the confusion are gangster Tundabhai, and a Pakistan-based terrorist, Chaman Chindi, who are out to kill Sanjay, Deepak and Vinod, so that Tundabhai can add Neela, Shree and Sherry to his harem - & the result is utter and hilarious chaos.

After the tragic passing of his parents, Raj Kumar is also separated from his elder brother. He ends up hungry and penniless in Bombay, and is taken in by a pickpocket thief, Usmanbhai, who trains Raj to be a master at picking pockets and stealing. It is in this atmosphere that Raj grows up and calls himself Raju Tardeo, for this is the area allocated to him to carry on stealing. Raju comes to know that a wealthy woman named Kamini has run away from home, and a reward has been placed in all newspapers. He finds her, pretends to fall in love with her, steals her necklace, and takes her back home to her oppressive uncle, who wants her to get married to Ranjeet.

Two rival burglars end up at the same school with the intent of abducting a rich man's son for a large ransom.

Bishan loses his fortune while helping his friend Kishan in his singing career. Now successful, will Kishan return the favour?
