Springe, a bourgeois little town in Lower Saxony in the 1970s and 80s. Evelin is caught between shame, worry, and social pressure due to the otherness of her son Oliver, who ultimately escapes to the Kiez quarter of Hamburg. Thanks to a big heart, an irrepressible sense of humour, and the ability to get up every time he’s down, Oliver manages the transformation to Olivia Jones, drag icon, entertainer, and Kiez restaurateur.

Karla, a strong, sensual and experienced woman, learns that she has terminal cancer. She only has a few months left. Malte, who is almost 18, lives with his alcoholic father in a dilapidated house on the island of Usedom. His mother died a few years ago and his sister has moved away. Crime writer Solveig Karlsdottir is pretty successful - although that's not particularly easy in Iceland. After all, with only two murders a year in the entire country, there aren't many sources of inspiration, but she makes up for this with a lot of imagination and her special feeling for things that aren't quite right. And this feeling kicks in strongly when she travels from Reykjavik to her old home village to look after her mother Margret, who is suffering from dementia. When an old friend from her youth is found dead at the harbor, she doesn't believe the official conclusion that it was an accident.
