Below the Waves, Above the Clouds

Recently discharged from a psychiatric hospital, Johanne is excited about seeing her daughter Lily. Eager to prove that she is fit to be a mother again, she takes Lily to the Tivoli amusement park. Amidst the noise and flashing lights, Johanne struggles to stay in control of herself and finally breaks down. Realizing how this affects Lily, she makes the toughest decision of her life and lets go of her daughter.

Alma lives a humble and secluded life behind the walls of a contemporary Catholic convent in Denmark. As she prepares for her perpetual vows as a nun, her older brother Erik unexpectedly shows up. He is a recovering alcoholic and clearly depressed, yet Alma struggles to show him mercy, as his presence unearths a family secret she has desperately tried to suppress. With the ceremony impending, Alma begins to lose her footing and doubt whether she is worthy of the love of her God.

Under mysterious circumstances, 17-year-old Anna and her mother, Eva, move from China to a small Danish provincial town. Until now, Anna has lived a rootless life with her mother, who, in pursuit of new experiences with different men, has left a trail of failed relationships around the world. Over the years, the two have built a dysfunctional symbiosis where Eva's dominant behavior has turned Anna into a pleaser towards her mother.
