Massenet - Thais

With the “Méditation”, Jules Massenet probably wrote one of the most famous melodies of our time. It originates from his comédie-lyrique Thaïs, which – unlike Massenet's operas Werther or Manon – never made it into the international opera repertoire. Presumably because the two main roles of Thaïs and Athanaël demand something almost superhuman from the singers. In the new production by Peter Konwitschny at the Theater an der Wien, the American soprano Nicole Chevalier is one of the most exciting singers currently on stage in the title role. At her side, the young Austrian bass-baritone Josef Wagner celebrates his house‍ debut. This is a fascinating and musically excellent performance of a timeless classic of the opera repertoire.

La Juive - Vlaanderen

In a city gripped by religious fanaticism, a Jewish goldsmith and his daughter face the perils of being outsiders. A great secret could save their lives - or else bring death and revenge. One of the great achievements of French opera, Fromental Halévy's La Juive was controversial from the start. For some an insult to religion and the state, for others a plea for tolerance, it is above all a human tragedy about a persecuted family. Roy Cornelius Smith and Corinne Winters star in this award-winning production by director Peter Konwitschny.

Tristan und Isolde

Peter Konwitschny's new production on the première stage in Munich gives it a new, optimistic interpretation. At the opening of the Munich Opera Festival 1998, Tristan und Isolde was staged in what is now the ninth new production at the Bavarian State Opera since its world première. Director Peter Konwitschny worked together with stage and costume designer Johannes Leiacker a team already well known in Munich for its much-respected Parsifal. Zubin Mehta conducted, shortly before being called to be General Music Director at the Bavarian State Opera. The title parts were interpreted by the American tenor Jon Frederic West, widely known for his Wagner-roles and Waltraud Meier, one of the greatest Isoldes of our time.

Götterdämmerung

Third day of the trilogy "Der Ring des Nibelungen" by Richard Wagner, in the production by Peter Konwitschny (Stuttgart State Opera 2000, recorded live on October 3, 2002 and January 12, 2003). Albert Bonnema as Siegfried, Luana DeVol as Brünnhilde, Roland Bracht as Hagen. Lothar Zagrosek conducts the Stuttgart State Orchestra and the Stuttgart State Opera Chorus.

Lohengrin

This production of Wagner's mythic opera LOHENGRIN was recorded at Barcelona's Gran Teatre del Liceu in 2006 with Sebastian Weigle conducting Liceu Grand Theatre Symphony Orchestra and Chorus.

La traviata

With this production of La Traviata, director Peter Konwitschny achieved a resounding success and Marlis Petersen made a sensational debut in the title role. The first ever production of La Traviata by Peter Konwitschny of Graz Opera is a highly-focused, intelligent reading of the music that was widely acclaimed by audiences. With a reduced stage set and daring cuts in the score, the production concentrates on the tragic story of the courtesan Violetta. Soprano Marlis Petersen (2010 „Singer of the Year“ in Germany) is superb in the title role.
