The title character in Maria Nover (Sister Maria) is played by Eva Szorenyi. A convent-bred lass on the verge of taking her final vows, Maria falls in love with a handsome artist, portrayed by popular operatic baritone Sandor Sved. Due to a silly misunderstanding, she walks out on Sved and marries his best friend Paul Javor. The frustrated suitor quits the art world to become a world-famous concert singer. Years later, he returns to reclaim Maria, only to find that she's not only still a wife, but also a mother and a dedicated nurse. Gracefully bowing out of her life, the Pagliacci-like Sved continues his singing career to assuage his broken heart.

Lugosi works in the locomotive factory, earning little. He does not feel at ease in the world. Emmy, the colonel's daughter, visits the army post. The Hussar officers are all contemplating the question of whom Emmy is going to bestow her favours on. So far Pálóczy had the best chances, but now Korponay László, troubled by his indebtedness and his love-affair with an actress, sets his eyes on her. Emmy, however, dislikes Korponay's stereotypical phrases of courting as well as his unsettled relationship with the actress. The lieutenant, sobering down, is even willing to renounce his rank for Emmy, and her heart eventually goes to him.

There is no school on the mine site. Teacher Gábor Nagy is enthusiastic about the organisation. The chief engineer Laskó, on the pretext that there are not enough children to open a school, ruins his whole job, has his men throw the benches out of the engine room, which has been converted into a classroom, and chases the children away. The teacher, however, does not give up the fight and, together with the miners, continues to fight for the school. Eventually, all the problems are solved, new families arrive on the site, whose children have reached the required number of children and can continue their education.
