A businessman on the verge of bankruptcy, Mercadet, is harassed by his creditors. To keep them waiting, he invents a fictitious partner, Godeau, who has gone to make his fortune in India and who should return laden with gold. The heart of the plot is therefore this famous Godeau whom we spend our time waiting for, and who never comes. While waiting for Godeau, Mercadet has a rich idea: to marry his daughter Julie to Monsieur de la Brive, whom he believes to be very rich.

Yasmina, a rich Tunisian Princess, daughter of a French lady and a Muslim gentleman, is betrothed by a father to a rich fifty year old man named Afsen. She reluctantly accept the marriage but soon becomes ill from boredom and she falls in love with the French doctor called from Tunis to take care of her, Hector Grandier, who also happens to be a childhood friend. Her husband finds out and Yasmina sticks a knife in her own bosom in a middle of a fight. The Princess's maid, Athima, accuses the old husband of attempting to kill the girl and he is sentenced to death. Hector rescues him from his fate and the two lovers are free to love each other in the eyes of the law.

When Vernonet learns that Chourinette is to marry another man, he is so upset that he decides to commit suicide on her wedding day. The young woman gets wind of his intention and is so moved by his act of love that she drops everything and runs away with Vernonet. But the groom's family and hers are on their trail to settle a few scores.

Boubouroche, a decent guy, enjoys shopping and playing cards at the cafe with his buddies: Potasse, that he is quick to "scold" for playing the wrong card, Fouettard and Roth. At the mouth of the Rhone, Jacques Renaud and his fiancee Lisette are cursed by a gypsy woman as punishment for their wrong decision.

Fleur de Paris has Mistinguett playing herself in a double role as two very different characters. One role has her performing as a music hall star, whose popularity leads an American impresario to lure her with a lucrative offer to tour the United States. The other role turns her into Margot Panard, a young working-class dressmaker lured to the theater by posters of Mistinguett.

Lieutenant Varnière, responsible for discovering the cause of the death of two officers in Algeria, unmasks the assassin in the person of a Russian who lives with three women. He falls in love with one of them and runs away with her while the Russian is killed by a devoted servant.

A famous academic, very in love with his much younger wife, has every reason to believe that his love is reciprocated. He learns that he is being cheated on and falls seriously ill. His wife cares for him tirelessly and he understands that she has always given him the best of herself.

This is a love story, a story of rivalry and revenge but, above all, a story about sport. The great passion is about union rugby.
