Set in Liverpool, England during the 1960s. It follows the members of two families as they struggle to cope with the social turmoil of this period. Mickey O'Rourke, his wife Mary Ann and their son Ritchie must contend with Ritchie's girlfriend Cathy, who is pregnant by another man. Nick Spencer and his wife Connie have a daughter Christine who brings an unsuitable boyfriend home. Meanwhile, Connie is becoming dependent on tranquilizers and her brother tries to borrow money from Nick.

When Marjorie's husband of 20 years dies of a brain tumour, she's hit financially as well as emotionally. The money she makes packing tights in a factory isn't enough to cover her rent, and her TV is repossessed. Soon after the funeral she meets Arnold, a wealthy pub landlord, who squires her to the local Conservative Club ball in an effort to cheer her up. Life with Arnold promises not only companionship but undreamt-of luxury, but Marjorie's friends and family do not necessarily approve.

When working-class Liverpudlian Rick Fairley reveals his long-standing interest in cross-dressing to his wife, Marian, she is understandably surprised -- as are her parents, Reggie and Alma Titherington. But, as Rick's eye-opening interest leads the long-stagnant Fairleys into titillating new romantic territory, the couple find that a little bit of lipstick goes a long way when it comes to reinvigorating their marriage.

Screenplay was a drama anthology television series, broadcast on BBC between 1986 and 1993. Numerous episodes were produced including one named "Boswell and Johnson's Tour of the Western Islands" starring Robbie Coltrane as English writer Samuel Johnson who in the autumn of 1773, visits the Hebrides off the north-west coast of Scotland. That episode was directed by John Byrne and co-starred John Sessions and Celia Imrie.

All Quiet on the Preston Front (or the shortened Preston Front as it became known for series two and three) was a BBC comedy drama about a group of friends in the fictional Lancashire town of Roker Bridge, and their links to the local Territorial Army infantry platoon. It was created by Tim Firth and ran from 1994 to 1997.
