On New Year's Eve, many people reflect on the results of their lives. The hustle and bustle of preparing a festive feast distracts, but not everyone. The heroine of the film, a young beautiful woman, reflecting on what the past year has brought, realizes that except for disappointments and resentments in her life nothing happened. And then she decides to leave her husband.

Plot revolves around the post-war decades and tells about the fate of former participants of the Great Patriotic War - Vera Boglyuk, Nina Verkhovskaya, Dusya Koroleva, Zina Skvortsova and Natasha Druzhinina.

After losing his parents in the war, the boy ended up in an orphanage, from which he escaped and was taken in by a village teacher. Following in the footsteps of his tutor, Valya Kandaurov graduated from the Pedagogical Institute and began working in a rural school. And then a girl from the city where he was studying came to Vale and invited him to follow her. But neither his career nor the joys of a comfortable life brought him satisfaction and he returned to his homeland.

A 'runaway' homeless man, once a renowned athlete, finds himself marooned in the small, snow-covered town of Zarechensk. Victor lands a job at an orphanage, where he soon meets a young teacher who becomes both a compassionate friend and the love of his life. Consequently, it is in Zarechensk that a train carrying a film crew from the capital, on their way back to Moscow, is compelled to delay their journey for a few days. Remarkably, Zarechensk becomes the place where a director finally discovers the perfect actress for his leading role and encounters a man who has fled from her love. Meanwhile, a producer makes the ultimate decision to select this town as the filming location for her upcoming movie.
