Try as he might, Fi Cheung can’t rid himself of a profound motion sickness and insecurity associated with living on land. Harking back to a childhood overflowing with adventure and fantasy, he recounts anecdotes of quasi-sci-fi scenarios featuring the notorious pirate Cheung Po-tsai with whom his grandpa claimed lineage and Mazu, Goddess of the Sea, vanquishing a giant sea monster amid tensions between navy troops of both sides of the Straits! Those were the fishing days of counting on divine providence to weather the harsh elements of nature. Now heading north for one final destination on the eve of resuming his sea-faring days, Fi follows the clues on the treasure map bequeathed by his grandpa on a hunt for a treasure irrevocably lost but not forgotten.

“Every man has his own destiny: the only imperative is to follow it, to accept it, no matter where it leads him.” Inside an after-hours bowling alley, a counselling session is underway with the attendances discussing the various merits and drawbacks of execution strategies and the prevention of occupational hazards. As the camera lingers on the gory actions, set to offbeat music and at times muted and occurring out-of-frame, a foreboding, dark and somewhat sinister overtone hangs heavy in the air. In a profession such as his, life is predestined by karma and choice is not an option.

“Once clothed as an official, you represent law and justice.” This was taught to young detective Xian who worked under Detective “Silent Dog” Ao to catch mountain robbers. To everyone’s dismay, the robbers turned out to be detectives from neighbouring counties who were forced to rob the ruling county to save the poor. Through trickery and lies, Ao started a bloodbath to kill the robbers. Shaken to the core by Ao’s deceit, the originally naïve Xian abandoned his dreams to uphold righteous values. Not to be outdone, he ended up murdering the treacherous Ao for his own gains. With blades and blood, Xian was later hailed as a legendary detective.
