A toy stuffed dog has just been sewn together when it hears a young child ask for an orange. The child's mother explains that they have no money, and so she cannot buy any oranges. The dog is then packed up along with a box full of other toys to be sold, but it soon winds up in the street. The dog picks up an orange from a curb side stand, and hopes to take it home to the child. But that night, before the dog can get back to the child's home, it must face a series of strange and frightening adventures.

When the famous Miss Phalène has an accident near the village, Aurélie hosts her. Before leaving, Miss Phalène invites Aurélie to Paris, where she hires her as a maid but soon fires her for being caught with Tom, her suitor. Aurélie and Tom become dancers, and she meets the wealthy banker Arachnus, who lures her into a trap. Tom saves her but dies. Returning home, Aurélie is rejected by her uncle and finds her fiancé has a child with another fly.

Brothers Isaak and Borukh are both in love with Sarra, but Sarra chooses Isaac and they got married. However, Sarra could not conceive for ten years, and their Rabbi tells them that according to Jewish law, they must divorce. Isaak's parents push him to sign the divorce paper, then their Rabbi drops the divorce paper to Sarra's feet. She tells Isaac about her grief, and Isaak commits suicide. Soon after-wards, Sore realizes that she is pregnant, but she is now single.

An ant works to prepare for winter while a drunken grasshopper plays his violin and dances away his time. When the snow arrives, the grasshopper pleads with the ant for shelter and is turned away to die.
