May Day

My name is Ion. Who could have imagined the fate that awaited me: my birth under the Romanian dictatorship, the loss of my eyesight through an accident, my sudden escape from my homeland to seek a future that was a little too idyllic? One thing is certain: fate is like all the criminals that I listen to today for the Belgian federal police. With a little willpower, there is always a way to dodge its tricks. The person who taught me that is a close and loyal childhood friend. That friend is literature. Without her, I probably would not be what I am now, here, among you.

Fifty years ago, the entire Creole population of the Chagos Islands was expelled by the British authorities. This secret operation took place to facilitate the leasing of the main island, Diego Garcia, to the US government so that it could build one of its largest and most secretive military bases overseas. As the military lease is about to expire, Chagossian exiles are attempting to recover their home in the middle of the Indian Ocean from Great Britain. The charismatic woman leading their fight in the UK is Sabrina Jean. Through unrelenting activism, including the exile community's improbable participation in the World Football Cup for Stateless People, she strives to keep the flame of hope alive in her community with one single goal: to return home. But as the elders disappear and memory fades, time is running out.

Renowned architect Renaat Braem once called Belgium the ugliest country in the world. Beauty and ugliness are relative concepts, but Belgian architecture is remarkable, to say the least. The three-part documentary series Archibelge approaches Belgian architecture and spatial planning from the perspective of the identity of Belgians themselves, specifically the way we work, live, and relax. Each of these three facets is addressed in a single episode, focusing on Brussels, the countryside, and the coast respectively. The result is a compelling and visually surprising look at Belgian architecture, with testimonies from people who have strong opinions about it, such as Eric De Kuyper, Geert Van Istendael, and Hannes Coudenys. Why does Belgium look the way it does, and what should happen now?
