After divorcing her husband Hans, who had started a relationship with another woman because of her infertility, Maria Immermann leaves their shared apartment and moves to Berlin.

A middle-class, married woman, Mrs. Kessler, whose husband has been suicidal after losing his job, prostitutes herself once to get the family out of financial straits. The husband finds out about it and divorces her. When he threatens to take away her beloved son, she shoots him. He survives but she is prosecuted.

Herr Hoffmann is a famous widowed singer with a young daughter to raise, aided by his faithful manager. They meet a girl and Hoffmann falls for her, reluctant to believe that in fact she is in love with a musician.

The pleasure boat “Milwaukee” has a wide variety of guests on board: Frau Deiters, who is determined to get her daughter married off; Herr Krueger, who won a free ticket to travel onboard; Herr Dr. Bornemann, a completely introverted man, who has dedicated himself to his work; and Ms. Kathe, the ship’s photographer. On the way to Madeira, Mother Deiters quickly determines, that only Dr. Bornemann would be an appropriate match for her daughter. However, Fraulein Kathe secretly is in love with him. During a spectacular break-in at the villa of film star Marion Milner, the jewel thieves fortunately only manage to get their hands on imitations of the valuable jewelry. The police suspect the notorious master thief Silver-Jim, whom they have long been after. The commotion surrounding the break-in comes in quite handy for film producer Otto Pitt, who is currently shooting a crime film, as he hopes it will generate some free publicity for his project.

Georg Jacoby’s Jokeren is a light-hearted entertainment picture set during the carnival in Nice, a romantic comedy with a touch of melodrama. A young artist, fatally injured in a car accident, foolishly entrusts a batch of compromising love letters to Borwick, a crooked and unscrupulous lawyer, instructing him to destroy them. Instead, Borwick proceeds to blackmail the woman who sent the letters, Lady Cecilie Powder, married to the straight-arrow Sir Herbert Powder. Lady Cecilie gets help from her spunky younger sister Gill. In turn, she draws in Peter Carstairs, a debonair adventurer known to all as “the Joker” – the card that trumps all others. When the Joker repeatedly foils Borwick’s schemes, the crooked lawyer ups the ante, trying to incriminate his adversary Carstairs and expanding his demands to include marriage to Gill. But as the characters converge at yet another lavish carnival celebration party, it becomes clear that one card does indeed trump all the others: the Joker!
