Next Summer

It was eleven years ago when Trine, then 34-year-old, set fire to her house, an act that would land her in long-term psychiatric confinement. Despite countless suicide attempts, and without having fully quelled her (self-)destructive impulses, this woman now appears resolved to make an extremely ambitious fresh start: to portray her inner world in theatrical form. As she prepares the project with the help of filmmaker Alexander Lind, he is shooting what one might call the epitome of a meta-documentary. At the periphery of this recording, and in the front row opposite the theater stage, Trine's parents are waiting, with whom she yearns to reconcile.

It was Denmark's largest work of art and at the same time triggered a historic shitstorm when the artist Elle-Mie Ejdrup created a 532 km long line of laser light along the Nazi bunkers on the west coast on May 4, 1995. Former resistance fighters, top politicians and the press fought fiercely over the work. After receiving death threats and being sent out into the cold for two decades, the team behind the work is now telling the story.

As children, twin brothers Carl and Niels were inseparable, but now that they have grown up they face losing one another. In a poetic farewell ritual or rite of passage that takes place in intimate, dark spaces, they reflect on their bond with one another and how their characters relate to each other. In a mirror, their two faces seem to melt into one, but also flip out of sync when Niels expresses his great desire to be with Carl, while Carl maintains that he doesn't miss Niels that much. Declarations of love and pain follow one another. Gradually, the characters and desires of the young men shine through. A film about competition, sharing life, saying farewell and defining who you are without the other.
