Young engineer Pavel Kaurov goes to his first destination — to the port city of Sibirsk. He is appointed to lead a group of cranes: gantry and floating. However, besides Pavel, fellow students came to the station to meet her — Petunin's brother and sister, in whose house she is staying. Soon Annushka, who has long loved Pavel, arrives. From that day on, he had trouble after trouble. After a crane accident, which happened through his fault, the hero pulls himself together and does everything to regain the confidence of the brigade...

Born in Volzhsky, raised by a strict and domineering grandmother, Ekaterina lost her mother at an early age. Rare encounters with her father, an old, distinguished captain, shaped her into a strong and uncompromising character. War broke out. Without hesitation, Ekaterina went to work in a hospital. There she found her first love, which also brought her first disappointment. After the war, having graduated from university, Ekaterina became an engineer and head of a river port section. She had a complicated relationship with the head of the shipping company. When he was dismissed from his job due to justified complaints, Ekaterina realized that she had lost the person closest to her forever.

The Greek teacher Belikov, who works in a rural gymnasium, loved to keep things in cases, was afraid of everything and lived himself, as if in a case, on the principle: “no matter what happens”. By this principle, he literally "terrorized" the gymnasium and the villagers. Hope appeared when Varenka arrived in the village - “not a girl, but marmalade”, although she was already aged, and “did not mind being married, even if only to a teacher of the Greek language”.

The childhood of three friends, Ilya, Yacob, and Pavel, was spent in the innkeeper's house. Their three destinies are similarly unhappy. Yakob died of tuberculosis, Ilya, after robbing a merchant, committed suicide. And Pavel, who let the woman he loved join a brothel, can no longer be happy.

Negina, a popular but poor actress, receives lessons from her fiancé Meluzov. Prince Dulebov, intending to take advantage of the girl's dire circumstances, suggests sponsorship, gets refused and becomes spiteful. Despite the latter's intrigues, Negina's benefice performance is triumphant and she receives a large sum of money, part of which Dulebov himself has to provide to keep his face. Still, the entrepreneur refuses to prolong her contract. One after another ecstatic admires come to her expressing their affection, among them Narokov, Naluzov and Velikatov. She leaves honest but dull Meluzov and goes away with rich Velikatov, motivated not by greed but by the desire to work on stage, the only thing she is really in love with.

Faith Vans, an employee of one of the departments of the US State Department, receives a summons to the commission to investigate un-American activities, and her prosperous, calm life begins to collapse. But Faith doesn't give up, and she fights for her rights.
