The story revolves around two young schoolboy pioneers, Petya Vasechkin and Vasya Petrov, as they navigate their attempts at self-discovery and their shared affection for their friend, Masha Startseva.

Best friends and mischievous third-graders Vasya Petrov and Petya Vasechkin, despite their differences, share a love for adventures. Romantic Vasya falls for his serious, excellent classmate Masha and writes her an anonymous love note. However, the quick-witted Masha identifies Vasya due to his errors and rejects him harshly. Upset, Vasya confides in Petya, who then devises a cunning plan to win Masha over.

Two completely different sons grow up in the same family. The youngest, Frol Kalitkin, is an exemplary seventh-grader, winner of Olympiads, the first student. And the eldest, Andryusha, is a loafer, a loafer and a dude. The “correct” Frol takes up the upbringing of his brother.
