Fate brings ordeals to characters that find themselves immersed in deep crisis; they must seek the strength to cope with adversity. In a remote and cold region of Russia, Galya, a middle-aged woman with a drinking problem, has been separated from her twin daughters and she wants them back. On the other hand, Grishka and Anton are a young couple who decide to get married, but right after the wedding their relationship is put to the test in a brutal way. Artyom longs to see his missing father, but his mother objects. There is only one element that brings all of these characters together: misfortune.

There are two of them: a mother and a girl. They have no names. And they are in a constant run. The mother runs away from the daughter in an attempt to start new life, and the girl runs after her mother as she has no idea how to live without her. This endless run is full with repeated mistakes and resembles a barrel-organ sorrowful song or a spinning-top rotation. This small ridiculous toy "volchok" was the first toy in the girl's life, the only thing that tied her with the mother.

In Yekaterinburg over the Christmas period, shop assistant Lenka Shabadinova experiences a number of incredible events and unexpected meetings.

The brisk and purposeful Zinaida sells cosmetics and learns from one of her clients that if she gives birth to a child in America, he will automatically receive US citizenship. And when he reaches adulthood, he will be able to leave and move his parents to their new homeland. At a meeting with her friends, Zina suggests that they all get pregnant together and save up money to make a baby tour. It remains for a small matter — to get money and a father for the future American.

One day, Tamara went out to throw out the garbage and met Pasha at the entrance with a bottle of wine and a desire to talk. After a visit, the man gets into the apartment of a new acquaintance, and she tells him how much she loves her husband Lenechka, who took her "rejected" from the village, planted her at home for a sewing machine and called "gupeshka" - in honor of an aquarium fish, submissive , silent, unwittingly devoted to the owner.

A story about a chance encounter that momentarily destroyed a successful and happy family life. All of a sudden the woman found passion and desire more important than her loving husband and cherished child. The father and son suffer from the realization that they are no longer needed, but try to understand and forgive. The woman, who failed to become happy, is in turmoil.

Lisa is going through a divorce: her husband found a younger woman and left her with two preschool-age boys. Just when things begin to settle down after the breakup, Lisa receives a strange call from a woman that calls herself her aunt, despite Lisa's growing up in an orphanage and never knowing her relatives. The woman tells Lisa that her bloodline is under a curse that kills all of its offspring. The only way to escape the curse is to abandon the children. Lisa thinks it's a conspiracy her ex-husband planned to get full custody, so she throws the woman out.

By My Side is a poetic meditation on our inability to notice the most important thing in live: love. It is an exploration of our tendency to hide from love and bar it from our lives; to unknowingly push it away, bewildered by our own feelings, even when it appears in the guise of a regular, flesh-and- blood woman. And yet, it always comes back...
