The Man Who Was Too Free

In 2008, Natasha, a newly rich woman, decides to open an independent TV station in Russia and builds an open-minded team of outcasts. By 2020, Natasha has lost everything to Russia's war between Propaganda and Truth.

"Citizen poet. Run of the Year” is not a continuation of the satirical project of the same name, which became wildly popular in Russia in 2011-2012. And not even its result. This film is a memory of the most lively, powerful and interesting year in the political life of the country over the past 20 years. The film is a reflection on the reasons for the rapid awakening of the civic position of millions of people. The film is a message to our near future.

The film chronicles the final journey of 88-year-old Russian former top-secret scientist and philanthropist Dmitriy Zimin, alongside his longtime American friend Augie Fabela, acting US police officer, before Zimin’s scheduled euthanasia. Against the backdrop of geopolitical tensions between Putin’s Russia and the USA and the outbreak of war in Ukraine, the film captures the closing scenes of a life and a time of peace. Zimin’s story is an embodiment of the harsh historical cycles that have defined Russia over the past century.

After her father’s death, the daughter of one of the forefathers of modern Russian democracy, Ksenia Sobchak, tries to understand the 18 years of his political fate. Together with the director Vera Krichevskaya she gives the word to Anatoli Sobchak’s colleagues and opponents, gets acquainted with the criminal case which annulled his career, and tries to find an answer to the question what Anatoly Sobchak’s fate would be in today’s Russia.
