The opera singer Carlo Martin comes to the Royal Opera for a guest performance and the girls in the ballet immediately gets a crush on him. Martin courts one of them, Märta Holm, who is torn between Martin and her own fiancée Arne.

The story takes its beginning in 1518 , the Danish King Christian II has taken Sweden. Sten Sture the younger appeal to all loyal subjects to resist. The offer reaches the farmer Mats Waltersson in Dalarna , Sweden's heart and he gathers his men. Dalmas were going from house to house, they do not want a Dane on the throne. The farmer Per Jonsson doesn't think too well about the factory in the neighborhood, since he thinks that it destroys the fishing and makes the young people leave the countryside. When the workers at the factory go on strike, they ask him to sell milk to them and let them work in his forest. But Jonsson is stubborn and refuses to give them any help at all. At least until he is in an accident and also need help.
