The Road to Nowhere

Life in a Ukrainian village after the Soviet revolution. A poetic ballad, which through the lens of a child's observations, dreams and hopes rely on the belief for a new and better future. Living with his grandfather and mother, little Mykhailyk has a great passion for books and hearing about a huge library at a nearby castle, he begins making plans to go there.

Once, a young man, Sandy, undertook to transport two strangers to Snake Island to the palace of the wealthy Hanover. The landlord, admiring the courage of a young sailor who was not afraid of the stormy weather, invited the young man to be his guest. Walking around the fabulous palace, Sandy accidentally finds out the story of Hanover.

The first postwar years. The Director of a small breeding station Avdotya Pavlovna is not immediately convinced of the anti-science of the official Lysenkov direction in biology. But making sure leaving the farm as an ordinary agriculturist, where he works on breeding new wheat varieties on the basis of the persecuted Lysenkova chromosome theory of heredity.

Together with his girlfriend Lyuba, the hero believes in a happy happy life, which his father Sebastian affirms with his deeds.

Prosecutor's office investigator Vershinin is leading two cases - the murder of a notorious scoundrel and speculator, as well as the search for the author of anonymous denunciations against plant director Kuleshov, who is opposing those who, while shouting about perestroika, defend their own benefit.

Soon after the father leaves for the front, the mother dies - and the children are left alone. And then fourteen-year-old Lyubasha takes care of her younger brothers and sisters.
