Water and Sugar – Carlo Di Palma: The Colours of Life

An impassioned documentary on the resistance of the largest population in the world without a state. Their identity perennially denied, told through dramatic unreleased footage filmed by a Kurdish journalist during the siege of Cizre in the Kurdistan that was yet never born

Banned in Iran this experimental film uses fictionalized, grainy, home video footage to tell the story of the abusive relationship between a successful middle aged Iranian businessman and his 18 year old wife, Goli. She has just received a camcorder as his birthday present and the entire story is told from the view of this camcorder. Goli has lived with him and been his sex slave since he took her captive as a nine year old from her family in the Kurdish rebellion. Now she is pregnant, but as she starts to talk back to him and he discovers that she has learned English and started to read, he again is making her more and more a prisoner in his home.

In the Summer of 2014, the Islamic State invaded Shengal, the Ezidi capital in Kurdistan (Iraq). The plan was to exterminate the ethnical/religious minority who were despised and called “devil worshippers’. 5000 Ezidi men have been killed, and 7000 women and children have been taken into slavery. This film tells Shengal’s liberation through the stories of five partisans who are five archetypes of the many that came to fight against the Islamic State from several different countries.

S is tortured. N is beaten up and then offered the job as a police doctor, a reward for leading the police to S. She accepts because then she can collect and pass on the names of people murdered or tortured. She will attend many mass murders of women and children. Once she can save them by fabricating that a child has cholera, with greater risk of contamination if she is dead. – When M understands that he cannot win N's love, he smuggles both N and S out of the country.
