A group of children are evacuated during world war two into the care of an alcoholic woman.

A quirky spy show of the adventures of eccentrically suave British Agent John Steed and his predominantly female partners. Ultimately, the money proves to be more troublesome than it is worth when it almost costs him his dignity and the woman he loves.

Terry Thomas as a retired army officer leads the gang, which includes Athene Seyler and Hattie Jacques, on a series of capers that nearly go awry when their maid, Billie Whitelaw, an ex-con and also a resident of the block, falls for a police officer.
