For the two young war returnees Klaus Schriewer and Peter Stoll, who have secured their economic survival with a small handcart transport business, this first means looking for a reasonably habitable place to live. The two friends have identified a shipwreck, a former fishing trawler, which they call "Noah's Ark" and which they want to refurbish into a habitable home...

Unfortunately, his telegram reaches her too late and a motley group of guests arrives. They promptly pitch tents in the garden of the half-finished building.

Not wanting to return home, Hannelore takes job as a chambermaid which also involves giving sexual favors to the guests at an extra charge. Meanwhile, a female cat burglar visits Das Liebesnest every night and each time she gets caught, she offers her body to the captor to keep them quiet.

On a trip through the Salzkammergut, a couple singing pop songs tell the story of another duo and their difficult path to marriage: he was into light entertainment, while she was into serious art.

Based on the novel by Friedrich Gerstäcker, the film, set entirely in the state of Arkansas, tells of the conflict of interests between the local townspeople and homesteaders on the surrounding land, miners arriving during the gold rush, cowboys and cattle thieves who cause problems in the area, and the native tribes of the region. Two adventurers arrive in town and try to restore peace to it and its inhabitants.
