Diploma Dilemma

A lively classroom discussion starter, this animated film uses satirical humor to present some of the difficulties graduating students may encounter when looking for work. The film tells of two young people whose career ambitions seem constantly to be thwarted. Their scramble to make a living leads both of them through a succession of odd jobs and, by a strange twist of fate, to a remote lumbering camp. In following their picaresque adventures, the film explores the attitudes needed for surviving in an uncertain world and promotes reflection on how to bridge the gap between ideals and reality.

Every Dog's Guide to Complete Home Safety

This hilarious short animation offers over 40 safety tips for homes with infants and young children. The film's hero is a very earnest, somewhat pompous, but endearing dog called Wally. A "professional" in home safety, Wally is assigned to a house with an infant whose parents have little safety consciousness. Accidents and near-accidents succeed each other with lightning speed, constantly putting Wally to the test.

The Balgonie Birdman

This film tells the story of the efforts of the first Canadian to attempt to fly a human powered heavier than air aircraft

Oskee Wee Wee

This documentary is a zany portrait of the Grey Cup fever that hits the city of Ottawa, Ontario, during Grey Cup week. The film is also about the football game, where the Hamilton Tiger Cats faced the Saskatchewan Roughriders, and it is about Ti-Cats fans and their famous "Oskee Wee Wee", the magical chant with which they exhort their team to victory.

The Phoenix

The ancient myth of the phoenix, the legendary bird with the amazing power of self-regeneration, is reborn with a modern twist. In this animated adaptation of a story by Sylvia Townsend Warner, we follow Lord Strawberry's search for the fabled bird. He finds it in the deserts of Arabia and brings it home to his aviary. Upon Lord Stawberry's death, however, the phoenix ends up as a sideshow in a fairground. This spirited satire of human foibles, with its timely message about our treatment of nature's creatures, will appeal to young people and adults alike.

The Vinland Mystery

This short documentary depicts the search, discovery and authentication of the only known Norse settlement in North America - Vinland the Good. Mentioned in Icelandic manuscripts and speculated about for over two centuries, Vinland is known as "the place where the wild grapes grow" and was thought to be on the eastern coast between Virginia and Newfoundland. In 1960 a curious group of house mounds was uncovered at l'Anse aux Meadows in northern Newfoundland by Drs. Helge Ingstad and Anne Stine Ingstad of Norway. Added to the United Nations World Heritage List, l'Anse aux Meadows is considered one of the most important archaeological sites in the world.

Epilogue

This film employs a multi-image technique to contrast scenes of natural grandeur--mountains, forests, and wildflowers filmed in Canada's national parks--with images of the polluted rivers and countryside that result from the heedless exploitation of the environment. Without words.
