The daughter of a king, who also is a wizard, helps her beloved to outwit her father.

One day, a girl named Alyonka got a new pet - a chicken. He turned out to be a fidget and immediately went for a walk around the yard, unaware of the dangers that lay in wait for him at every step. Even under the wing of a mother hen you can’t hide from evil if you don’t have reliable, loyal friends.

The story of a little dreamer for whom the world around him is a fairy tale, where every object and every thing has a soul. However, only those who are naturally magical and creative can see and understand this. The boy's father, who has returned from the war, explains to his son that it is his imagination that has filled the yard with "secret inhabitants." The film explores the creative role of human labor. If something is created with dedication, it carries the soul of its creator.

Composer Edvard Grieg meets a girl collecting fir cones. He promises her a gift, only not now, but after many years. Later, he writes a musical piece for her 18th birthday. Based on the story by Konstantin Paustovsky.
