La Hora Marcada was a 1986 Mexican television anthology series famous for its horror and science fiction themes in the vein of the Twilight Zone. Although virtually unknown outside the country, it achieved a popular and critical success in Mexico. It had a series of rotating writers and directors, among them Emmanuel Lubezki, Guillermo del Toro and Alfonso Cuarón.

In the 1940s, a small Mexican town has seen its last three mayors assassinated in rapid succession. A naive janitor is recruited to become the new mayor, and he believes he will modernize the little town and usher in a reign of peace. But the system corrupts him very quickly, and he takes to abusing his power while associating with an unscrupulous assortment of opportunists, hypocrites and criminals.

After being deported back to Mexico, a man has no choice but to join the vicious drug cartel that has corrupted his hometown in order to survive.

Patada de Mula, an old retired boxer, lives with the guilt of having killed his opponent in his last fight, but he works as a masseur in a gym, sells balloons on Sundays and with the proceeds supports the widow of the opponent he killed and his son El Kid, an aspiring boxer, without his knowledge. Patada is also in love with his neighbor Marga, a young woman who is pushed into prostitution by the gangster Duque and his own father, but to whom Patada sends letters as an anonymous lover. The Kid is sponsored by Duke and detests Patada for the death of his father, but when he throws him out of the inn that his mother tends she confesses to him what he has done for them and the Kid asks her forgiveness and makes him his second.

Dalia and Daniel are a couple running away from the noise, the pollution and the social prejudice, so they take shelter at an isolated farmhouse, which used to belong to Daniel's father. There they are, in full intimacy with each other, only with nature and their own memories. However, the monotony and the loneliness gradually deteriorates their relationship.

Old Max remembers the time as a child when he was taken to the jungle where he met a prophet, a circus man and other weird characters.
