Jaya is a dancer who wants to build a charitable hospital for the poor, but when her show takes place, she is shot, making her unable to dance. The leader of her dance group decides to train Jaya's sister Ritu to fulfill Jaya's dream, but when Jaya is killed, Ritu's life is also under threat.

This movie revolves around a village hospital that was built by a generous hearted man, Choudhury Ramprasad (Ashok Kumar) who is also a patient in the hospital. The other patients include Isamil (Iftekhar), Dayaram (Anwar Hussain), Ratan (Jalal Agha), and the doctor is Dr. Sunil (Sunil Dutt). Amongst the patient is a singer (Deb Mukherji), who loves Shyama (Farida Jalal) a worker in the hospital. When Meeta Sharma (Waheeda Rehman) comes to the hospital to admit her son, she meets Sunil and their romance is rekindled. In the background of the hospital atmosphere is an election in the village, which is proceeding smoothly, but causing a disturbance is Ramprasad's son (Ramesh Deo). Other supporting caste include Jagirdar, Chand Usmani, and Jankidas.

Principal Vidyanand (Ashok Kumar) is a hardworking and diligent person. After Vidyanand serves his sentence, he has only one thing on his mind - to avenge his humiliation, and he will go to any extent to achieve this.

Then Anjana finds that Shekar is spending more and more time in the laboratory than with her, and she decides to take up dancing and singing, which does not auger well with Shekar. Arguments ensue, and both decide to live separately. When Shekar's mom comes to visit Shekar, both he and Anjana compromise to live together to fool his mother. Will they succeed in pulling wool over her eyes?

It all begins with the Portuguese executing the main revolutionary, Arthur Antonio Gomes, in the city's central square. They destroy everyone who had the imprudence to join the resistance. But these actions by the Portuguese only angered the colony's population.
